Dear Member of Congress,

We need to make health care more affordable. Congress should expand access to health savings accounts (HSAs) to drive down prices.

Americans are unhappy with the health care system. It is confusing, complex, and too expensive. Insurance premiums are sky-high, and they are straining family budgets. Meanwhile, government and insurance company bureaucrats control what doctors we can see and what treatments we can use.

Obamacare was supposed to fix this, but it has failed – miserably. We need a new approach. American families spend up to a fifth of what they earn on health care. That needs to come down!

President Trump wants to send some of the existing federal insurance subsidies “directly to the people, so they can purchase their own, much better, health care.” That’s the right approach, and it needs to be done…NOW!

The best way to do that is to let all American have access to money-saving HSAs. Every purchase with an HSA effectively comes with a built-in 25% discount, on average, thanks to its generous tax-free treatment. Furthermore, HSAs will finally force health care providers to compete. That kind of competition will lower costs and allow all Americans to shop for the best value that serves their needs.  

Right now, just one-in-five Americans have access to these money-saving accounts. That is unacceptable.

Expanding access to health savings accounts (HSAs) is the best way to make health care more affordable for all Americans. These tax-free accounts allow holders to save and invest – tax free – for current and future health care needs. HSAs can be used for a wide variety of medical expenses – including many that are not covered by conventional health insurance.

Because contributions to HSAs are tax free, they effectively come with a built-in 25% discount, on average, on all medical spending.  Expanding HSAs would also force health care providers to compete on quality and price, which would help lower prices. Most important, HSAs give account holders personal control over their own health care decisions, so they get the health care that fits their needs.

Yet because of government rules, only one- in-five Americans currently has access to HSAs. All Americans should have access to these money-saving accounts.
