Illinois residents already face the nation's highest state and local tax burdens. According to WalletHub.com, Illinois had the highest total state and local tax rates on a median U.S. household, at 15.1%, nearly 40% higher than the national average.
Illinois’ General Fund spending has exploded by nearly 40% since 2019.
- FY 2024: $50.6 billion
- FY 2023: $44.8 billion
- FY 2022: $46.4 billion
- FY 2021: $41.4 billion
- FY 2020: $36.1 billion
- FY 2019: $36.4 billion
Since 2019, Gov. Pritzker and the Illinois legislature have signed into law at least 24 tax & fee hikes, which collect an additional $5B+ from Illinois residents annually.
