Dear Illinois Official :

For decades, state of Illinois legislators have been passing fiscally irresponsible budgets hurting Illinois residents. This year was no different; the record-breaking 2024 fiscal year $50.6 Billion budget included massive tax hikes on struggling Illinois families, including:

Two gas tax increases (January 1 and July 1, 3.1 cents each) - over $100 million
A grocery tax increase - $400 million
End of the property tax rebate - $520 million
End of income tax rebates - $685 million ($50 per individual, $100 per dependent)
End of income tax rebates - $685 million ($50 per individual, $100 per dependent)
End of the "Back to School" tax breaks - $50 million (Sales tax holiday on clothing and school supplies and Double tax credit for teachers who buy classroom supplies)

Already burdened with the nation's highest combined state and local tax load, Illinoisan taxpayers are hurting. Locking over $1.5 Billion in tax increases on top of the highest combined taxes in the country is disrespectful and dangerous to Illinois families struggling with high inflation and an uncertain economy. 

Our state’s economy is fragile, and many families are fleeing for low-tax states who put citizens first. Voting for budgets that lock in high spending and tax hikes on top of the highest tax burden in the nation is irresponsible.

We encourage you to reverse the excessive spending and tax hikes incorporated in the FY 2024 budget. We need to aggressively work to reduce the excessive tax burden on Illinoisan families by reducing wasteful spending.

Illinois residents already face the nation's highest state and local tax burdens. According to WalletHub.com, Illinois had the highest total state and local tax rates on a median U.S. household, at 15.1%, nearly 40% higher than the national average. (Source)

Illinois’ General Fund spending has exploded by nearly 40% since 2019. 

FY 2024: $50.6 billion
FY 2023: $44.8 billion
FY 2022: $46.4 billion
FY 2021: $41.4 billion
FY 2020: $36.1 billion
FY 2019: $36.4 billion

Since 2019, Gov. Pritzker and the Illinois legislature have signed into law at least 24 tax & fee hikes which collect an additional $5B+ from Illinois residents annually.
