It's Time to Rein in Taxes

Utah has long been recognized as one of the best-managed and fastest-growing states in the nation, and now we have an important opportunity to build on that success through responsible tax and spending reforms. I support policies that increase transparency, accountability, and taxpayer control while ensuring that government growth remains sustainable and aligned with the will of the people.

A Utah Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR-style framework) would create sensible guardrails on revenue and spending growth, require voter approval for tax increases, and return surplus funds to taxpayers. This approach respects the partnership between citizens and government and helps ensure that growth in public spending reflects real public consent.

I also support strengthening the voice of local communities by allowing proposed local school district tax increases to be placed on the ballot through referendum. Giving voters a direct say in these decisions increases trust, improves transparency, and encourages careful stewardship of taxpayer dollars while still allowing communities to choose higher funding when they believe it is justified.

Finally, I encourage continued, responsible reductions in Utah’s income tax rate so that hardworking Utahns can keep more of what they earn and make decisions that best fit their families and businesses. Together, these reforms would empower citizens, reinforce fiscal discipline, and help keep Utah economically competitive and opportunity-focused for years to come.
