Thousands of families across our state face an uphill battle when their child is assigned to a public school that isn’t a right fit for their needs. Even when a public school is just a few blocks away and is a better fit for a family, restrictive laws can prevent a child from enrolling or allow a failing school to deny a family’s choice.

I am writing you today to remove these arbitrary lines and allow families the option to transfer public to public without unnecessary restrictions. No family should be trapped in a failing school or a school that doesn’t fit their needs because of where they live.

Open enrollment has benefitted families in other states and can benefit families in Mississippi too. It encourages healthy competition and innovation, ensures access to quality public schools regardless of zip codes and empowers parents to select the school that best fits their child’s needs.

I am asking you to VOTE YES for public to public school transfers for families across our state and pass legislation that removes these arbitrary lines for every Mississippi family.

Open Enrollment or public to public school transfers allow families to apply to any public school of their choosing.

When it comes to a child’s education, every family deserves to be in the driver’s seat. That means Mississippi families should have the ability to access public schools just like any other taxpayer funded public utility.

In Mississippi we lack that ability because of arbitrary lines and laws that allow the sending school to deny the transfer. When a child’s success depends on whether they live on the ‘right side’ of an imaginary line, it’s time for change.
