You deserve greater access to better health care at a price you can afford. To make that happen, we need to remove the barriers that stand between us and the medical professionals we trust.
Certificate of Need laws require proven medical providers to get permission from government bureaucrats and would-be competitors to open a new facility, expand an existing facility, or offer a new service. Believe it or not, during Covid states had to waive CON laws to allow healthcare facilities to add more beds!
It's like if 7-11 had to prove to a government board the need for a new location and then get Wawa's permission before it could open.
Repealing Certificate of Need Laws is a critical part of what we call a Personal Option in health care. The Personal Option is the doctor-supported plan that offers all Americans more flexibility and trusts you to make your own decisions about your health care - from insurance coverage to what doctors you can see to accessing new therapies. The Personal Option expands access to quality, affordable, and personalized health care for patients and families.
Lawmakers should pursue the following CON reforms to make their efforts most impactful:
1. Eliminate CON for new facilities: Repeal CON requirements for new health care facilities that providers wish to build.
2. Repealing CON for existing facilities: Eliminate CON requirements for current providers to expand existing facilities and add hospital beds.
3. End CON for medical equipment: End CON requirements for facilities that seek to purchase new medical equipment.
