Automated license plate readers (ALPRs like Flock cameras) are collecting and storing information about where Missourians drive. That data can reveal where people go, when they were there, and patterns about their daily lives.

The concerns go beyond individual misuse. Missourians deserve clear limits on how long this information can be kept, who can search it, where it can be shared, and what private vendors are allowed to do with it. Personal location data should not become a government or corporate database with few limits and little to no accountability.

Missouri has seen multiple cases involving government employees accused of using ALPR systems for personal purposes. When someone abuses access to this information, there should be serious consequences.

The General Assembly needs to address ALPR surveillance and data abuse. Missouri law should protect drivers from unchecked tracking, restrict the collection and use of their data, and hold those who misuse it accountable.
