Right now, a handful of monopoly utilities control power generation in our state. They earn guaranteed returns for shareholders while ratepayers are required to fund their projects - whether those investments make sense or not. That system rewards building more infrastructure, not controlling costs.
It’s hard not to notice how much influence these companies have in Jefferson City. When a few utilities can maintain large lobbying operations while families struggle to pay their electric bills, something isn’t balanced.
Missourians don’t get to choose their electricity supplier. We are stuck with one option - no competition, no leverage, no alternatives. That isn’t how free markets are supposed to work.
This legislation keeps the grid regulated and reliable, but introduces competition in electric generation. It gives consumers options and forces suppliers to compete for our business instead of relying on guaranteed profits.
Please stand with your constituents - not monopoly utilities - and support this bill by allowing it to move forward in committee.

Missourians are being forced to fund a government-protected utility monopoly, and our electric bills keep climbing.

That’s not the free market. That’s corporate favoritism.

While families struggle with rising costs, monopoly utilities use their guaranteed profits and ratepayer dollars to protect their turf in Jefferson City.

Now, lawmakers have a chance to restore competition and put consumers first.

Sen. Nick Schroer, Rep. Don Mayhew, and Rep. Tricia Byrnes have introduced legislation (SB 1411/HB 2207/HB 2233) that would break up the utility monopoly and require them to compete with other companies to build and sell power.

This would put power in the hands of consumers rather than forcing them to buy from a single monopoly utility. It would also do away with the utilities getting a guaranteed profit and making you foot the bill for everything they build.

Utilities have lobbyists pushing back on these bills, but you have a voice.

Missouri shouldn’t protect monopolies. Missouri should protect consumers. The utility lobby is pushing hard to preserve its special treatment. Lawmakers need to hear from citizens who believe in free markets and limited government.
