I am writing as a deeply concerned Illinois citizen and taxpayer struggling under one of the heaviest property tax burdens in the nation.
A recent analysis by the Tax Foundation found Illinois property taxes as a percentage of housing value was the 2nd highest in the nation at 1.95 percent — more than double the national average.
This tax calculator shows the stark contrast in taxes Illinois residents pay compared to other states. For example, in Illinois, taxpayers spend nearly $9,000 in property taxes on a $420,400 home. That same home would amount to just under $4,000 in taxes in nearby Indiana.
This unsustainable pressure is straining family budgets, forcing many of our neighbors to make painful sacrifices. Some face the heartbreaking choice between paying ever-rising property taxes or saving for their children’s education, retirement, or even basic household necessities.
Our communities deserve property tax relief. That is why I urge you to support and co-sponsor the following bills, each designed to provide concrete steps toward genuine property tax reform:
HB 9 – Education Property Tax Relief Fund
HB 2543 – Taxpayer Empowerment Act
HB 1142 – TIF District Referendums
At a time when families are often forced to consider moving to other states to escape exorbitant tax bills, we owe it to ourselves and future generations to restore affordability and competitiveness.
I respectfully request that you do all in your power to advance HB 9, HB 2543, and HB 1142. By co-sponsoring these bills, you can stand in solidarity with Illinois residents who yearn for relief from relentless property tax hikes.
Your leadership and advocacy on this critical issue could bring long-overdue relief to our hardworking families, help stabilize our housing markets, and strengthen our communities for years to come.
