Suburban legislators bailed out the Chicago Transit Authority with higher taxes

Chicago Transit Authority's deficit was roughly $230 million. Instead of forcing real reform to balance the budget, Gov. Pritzker and Mayor Johnson pushed a $1.5 billion annual Chicago bailout through Springfield.

Many legislators in Suburban Cook and collar counties voted to bail out the failed management of the Chicago Transit Authority with taxes on their own residents who may never use those services.

These taxes include:
- Higher tolls. A 45-cent passenger toll hike and a 30% commercial toll hike.
- Higher sales taxes. A 0.25% RTA sales tax hike in the Chicago region.
- Billions of road fund dollars diverted from downstate roads over the next decade.

Chicago’s failed transit bureaucracy was rewarded again. Instead of forcing CTA to clean up their budget, improve safety, fix service, and stop wasting money, Springfield reached for the same tiring answer: making Illinois families pay more.

And to keep the road builders quiet, legislators sweetened the pot with toll hikes and spending even though the Tollway didn’t have a shortage of money and didn’t have any plans on how to spend that money.

So, working families pay more to drive, pay more to shop, and get told it’s “Responsible government.”

This is the Pritzker-Johnson Chicago bailout: political appointees make the decisions, taxpayers get the bill, and legislators pretend a $230 million problem required a $1.5 billion tax-and-toll machine.

Illinois families are not an ATM. Stop raising taxes on the people of Illinois for the failed leadership in Springfield and Chicago.
