I want to express my gratitude for your support of Senate File 155 “International Physician Licensing," this session. Although the bill was not considered by the House Committee of the Whole before the session concluded, your backing of this important legislation did not go unnoticed.
This bill aimed to address the pressing need for increased healthcare access in Wyoming by authorizing the State Board of Medicine to issue provisional medical licenses to qualified international physicians. This initiative would have:
1. Expanded Healthcare Access: By allowing experienced international physicians to practice provisionally, we could have alleviated physician shortages, especially in underserved and rural areas.
2. Maintained High Standards: The bill ensured that only physicians meeting stringent criteria—such as holding a medical doctorate from a reputable program, being in good standing in their home country for at least five years, completing a residency or having seven years of practice, and possessing basic English language skills—would be eligible for provisional licensing.
3. Enhanced Patient Care: With more physicians available, patients would have benefited from reduced wait times and improved access to specialized medical services.
