Friday, March 27th

10:30 AM Volunteer Arrival for Setup

11:30 AM – 1:30 PM  is when gas prices will be lowered

Some Iowa lawmakers want to pass an automatic gas tax increase. We’re giving Iowans the chance to see exactly what that would mean for them by dropping the price of gas by $1.00 per gallon during our  'Gas-Station Gas-Tax' event.

AFP Iowa is hosting this Gas Tax Event to help families and drivers save money and quickly send a message to their legislators saying they do not support an automatic gas tax hike.

🕒 Itinerary

9:30–10:15 AM — Carpool Pickup Window

• I can pick up volunteers in Iowa City during this timeframe.
• We will arrive at the gas station by 10:30 AM for setup and prep. If you cannot make it by 10:30, as close to 11:30 is okay! 

10:30–11:30 AM — 🔨 Setup (Pre‑Event)

• Place cars and assign signage positions
• Set cones
• Manage car‑flow layout
• Set up the pump area
• Prep clipboards, QR materials, and scripts

• Participate in a brief rundown meeting before go‑time
• Everything is pretty straightforward — we’ll talk through the flow together on‑site.

11:30 AM–1:30 PM — Event Time

• The gas drop begins exactly at 11:30 AM and returns to its normal price right at 1:30 PM.

1:30 PM —  Chick‑fil‑A To‑Go

• We’ll have Chick‑fil‑A to‑go meals ready to hand out as soon as the prices drops.
• Cleanup should be light and well have enough hands to not have to have anyone worry about it! 

🔧 Volunteer Roles & What We'll Need Help With

🚗 Sign Holder Guide & Traffic Flow Management

• Help direct cars into the correct line so we can keep traffic moving efficiently and bring in as many cars in as possible.
• Additional individuals will stand along entry ways by busy traffic spots with signage marketing the decrease in cost! 

⛽ Pumping Gas & Processing Transactions

• Request driver’s card and pay for gas 
• Ensure correct and eligible fuel types
• Pump gas for each vehicle

Fuel rules:

• 87 Regular & E15 ONLY
• No diesel
• Small cans allowed
• No barrels
• Drivers may bring multiple cars through

📋 Clipboards + QR Code Contact

Speak with drivers at the pump to:

• Explain the event
• Share that lawmakers are considering an automatic gas tax increase
• Show drivers how much they’re saving
• Warn how expensive and unaccountable the proposal could be
• Ask them to scan the QR code and complete the form
• (It sends a message directly to their legislator and takes about 30 seconds to fill out.)

📣 What the Event Is About

This event shows Iowans their real‑life savings before lawmakers make decisions behind closed doors.

• Explain the proposed automatic gas tax and why tying it to CPI with no oversight isn’t principled or responsible and incentivize grassroots outreach with $1/gallon savings, asking them to take 30 seconds to send a message to legislator in Des Moines!
