Help Students Succeed, Renew the Invest in Kids Act

In George Washington Carver's words, “Education is the key that unlocks the golden door to freedom.”

Too often, many in our communities remain locked out of educational opportunities. It is only fair that parents and students have access to the education that works for them. Policies like the Invest in Kids Act can open that golden door.

Illinois needs to transform education from the current top-down standardized model to a bottom-up approach that enables every family and student to customize an education that best matches their values and priorities.

Education should be an experience that fosters every student's unique potential. The Invest in Kids Act is doing that right now by giving students from low-income families the financial resources they need to receive an education tailored to their unique needs and the best learning environment available. For many low-income families, the Invest in Kids program is the only way to access educational opportunities that are available to those with the means.

Without action to renew the program, more than 9,500 kids across the state could lose access to the school of their choice, with tens of thousands more on waiting lists who will never get that opportunity.

I’m encouraging you to renew the Invest in Kids Act.

Without the Invest in Kids program, tens of thousands of low-income families across Illinois will tragically not be able to afford a school that helps unleash the full potential of their children.

We must ensure more students from low-income families across Illinois have equitable access to educational opportunities. I urge you to support the extension of the Invest in Kids Act!

The bipartisan Invest in Kids Act was signed into law in 2017 and provides up to $100,000,000 in annual K-12 scholarships for kids from low-income families in Illinois to attend qualified private K-12 schools to meet their needs. Donations to the scholarship program are eligible for a 75% state tax credit.

The tax credit portion of the program ended in 2023 and needs to be renewed.

This program has awarded more than 40,000 need-based scholarships, and tens of thousands are on waiting lists vying to access it.

Tell your state legislators and Gov. Pritzker to support the Invest in Kids Act so more students from low-income families have equitable access to educational opportunities!
